❝Bejaia is full of memories. It keeps alive the story of a thousand-year history through its old quarters, mosques, and monuments that have survived until today." ❞ - Abdelkader Yefsah, Algerian historian

About Bejaia

Bejaia is a scenic coastal city in northern Algeria. It traces its origins back to the ancient Carthaginian settlement of Saldae in the 4th century BC. However, Bejaia truly flourished after the 7th century under Islamic rule.

During the medieval period, Bejaia was an intellectual center and prosperous port city. The Great Mosque was built in the 11th century in the Almoravid style. The Old City developed its distinctive architecture blending Arab-Islamic and Andalusian influences from this era.

In the 16th century, Bejaia came under Ottoman control. The landmark Kachaoua Mosque and other monuments were constructed during this period, further enriching the city's heritage. Bejaia's strategic location made it an important naval base for the Ottomans.

In the 19th century, Bejaia was occupied by France and served as a provincial capital during colonial rule. Buildings from this time include the imposing Gouraya Fort and Saint Augustine Church showcasing French colonial architecture.

Today, Bejaia retains its historic charms as a seaside city on the Mediterranean. The winding alleys of the Casbah old quarter evoke its multicultural past. Local crafts include pottery, embroidery and coral jewelry pieces. The mild climate and natural scenery attract visitors year-round.
